Where are my login details?

To log in, you just need to click the link we have emailed to you. If you can't find the email, contact us at burnetnewsclub@economist.com. On the day, we'll also have a dedicated support line you can call if you need assistance quickly. The number is 0207 576 8133.

What is BNC Live?

BNC Live is an exciting day for you and your students. Your club will work with BNC clubs around the country to help a city decide whether an author with offensive views should be allowed to speak at a university event. The day will be a mixture of videos, in-classroom activities, and online discussion. Your students will get live responses from experts and debate their opinions in real-time with other club members. Their decisions will influence how the day works, a bit like a choose-your-own-adventure book.

I'm having technical problems / can't play the videos

If you can't play the videos on this site, please tell us as soon as possible. We have an alternative but we need to know what problems you are having so we can help. You can email burnetnewsclub@economist.com before the day. On the day, call the our support number on 0207 576 8133.

We have put together this troubleshooting document. If you ring our support number, one of our team can talk you through potential problems. You might need to get assistance from your IT department.

What should I tell my students?

Definitely let them know they'll be off-timetable, taking part in a BNC event. Beyond that, it is up to you. We won't be telling the students that the story and people from Briford are fictional until the end of the day, so you can do the same if you want. If you have any students who might be affected by the issue, you may want to tell them what the day is about in advance.

Managing sensitive conversations

The day involves the airing of a controversial view which students may find offensive. If you know the BNC, you'll know we don't shy away from challenging issues. However, we do want to create a safe and inclusive environment to explore different viewpoints. If you are concerned or would like advice dealing with the discussions, please read the guidance on page 38 of the Teacher briefing booklet that you will receive in January. You can also call our team before and throughout the day if you need more support. Our number is 0207 576 8133. The support numbers will also be included in your Teacher briefing booklet.

What do I need to prepare ahead of the day?

You need to book a room with a screen to watch videos on and a computer that your students can access. You also need to make sure your students are off-timetable. We're sending you a Teacher briefing booklet in January and the checklists on pages 6-7 outline everything you need to do before the event.

Can my students go to lunch at the usual time?

That depends, as you need to stick to the event timings. The lunch break is 12.15-13.15. NB. Students will not be able to attend assembly, registration or tutor periods between 09.00 and 14.45. If there is something that cannot be rescheduled, get in touch, and we can make an alternative arrangement.

What is the maximum number of students that can do it?

We have provided resources for a group of up to 30 students. If you want to run the day with more than one class, please let us know so we can send extra materials.

Where can I find a schedule for the day?

There will be a schedule for the day in the Teacher briefing booklet that we will send to you in January.
